【昭和学報】プログラムを通じて感じた、ブータンの皆さんのあたたかさ ～BHUTAN WEEK 2022に参加して～ ／ My experience of the kindness of Bhutanese students ～My experience participating in BHUTAN WEEK 2022 ～

現代教養学科主催の「BHUTAN WEEK 2022」が2022年12月15日から1週間、対面で実施された。ブータン王立大学と昭和女子大学との交流プログラムで、このうち12月17日と21日に参加した様子を日本語と英語で伝えたい。
A week-long exchange program, “BHUTAN WEEK 2022,” sponsored by the Department of Contemporary Liberal Arts (CLA), was held at Showa Women’s University (SWU) from December 15th (Thu.) to 21st (Wed.).

BHUTAN WEEKとは

　ブータン王立大学の学生が、昭和女子大学の学生と交流する短期招へいプログラムは、本学で初めて開催された。きっかけは、科学技術振興機構（JST)「さくらサイエンスプログラム」に採択されたこと。ブータンから学生を招へいすることが決まり、今回、2年生から4年生の男子学生3人、女子学生7人、男女教員各1人ずつ、計12人が来日した。
 
　昭和女子大学からは、現代教養学科以外も含めて、受け入れ準備等に約10人、体験授業やフィールドツアーにのべ200人以上の学生が参加した。現代教養学科以外の学生は、国際交流に関する情報を国際交流センターが配信するメール「Global Network」を通じて参加した。
 
　学内でのキャンパスツアーや学生交流に加え、渋谷や浅草などでフィールドツアーを行った。12月17日は、日本橋と滝野川・王子や谷根千の町を散策した。このツアー開催にあたり、現代教養学科「社会調査研修」受講生は、何度も現地を訪れ、準備を重ねてきた。そして、散策場所が書かれたまちあるきマップを事前に作成した。このまちあるきマップをブータンの学生に配布し、散策を開始した。現代教養学科の受講生の説明を熱心に聞きながら、ブータンの学生は、散策時に興味を持った写真を撮影し、その写真に対するコメントを記録した。最終日である12月21日は、ワークショップ、成果報告会、修了式が行われた。

What is BHUTAN WEEK ？

The program was founded for the purpose of facilitating interaction between the students of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) and Showa Women’s University (SWU). In the previous academic year, it was held online due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, so this was the first time the students from both universities met in Japan, in person. “BHUTAN WEEK 2022”is a program officially adopted as part of the Sakura Science Exchange Program of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan.
 
This year, a total of 10 RUB students from sophomores to seniors (seven female students and three male students), as well as 2 faculty members, visited SWU. They participated in many activities, such as a campus tour, a one-day trip around Tokyo, and a collaborative workshop.
 
Many SWU students, not limited to those of CLA, were involved in this program. The program had been advertised widely through SWU’s “Global Network.” About 10 students took on the task of preparing for the program and a total of more than 200 students participated in various tours and other events.
 
On December 17th (Sat.), the participants went on a tour of the old parts of Tokyo in Nihon Bashi, Takinogawa, Oji, and Yanesen. The tour was the result of careful planning by CLA students who had visited the route beforehand and created a special map for the occasion. The Bhutanese students enjoyed the tour, listening earnestly to the explanations by the CLA students. On December 21st (Wed.), after a collaborative workshop and presentations by the participating students, the closing ceremony was held.

【12月17日】日本橋と滝野川・王子を散策

【日本橋】
　日本橋エリアでは、福徳神社や日本橋三越本店、日本橋髙島屋S.C.などを巡った。
ブータンの学生は、日本橋の下にある竜の像に関心を持っていた。その際、ブータンの国旗に竜が描かれているという話を学生の一人と話した。他にも、日本橋にあった店内の着物にも関心があるようだった。また、日本橋のビル群を見て、建物が高いと話していた。

【Nihonbashi】
First we visited the Nihonbashi (literally Japan Bridge) area, which was a castle town during the Edo shogunate, but is now Tokyo’s flourishing financial and economic center. We went to Fukutoku Shrine, a small shrine in the midst of high-rise buildings, and Mitsukoshi Department Store, one of the oldest department stores in Japan. The Bhutanese students were impressed not only by the area’s modern architecture, but also the colorful kimono displayed in the shops.
 
The statue of a dragon under the Nihonbashi Bridge particularly drew interest from the Bhutanese students, who told me later that the national flag of Bhutan features a Chinese-style dragon.
 
【滝野川・王子】
　滝野川・王子エリアでは、とげぬき地蔵（高岩寺）や東京さくらトラム・庚申塚駅、稲荷湯を訪れた。ブータンの学生は、高岩寺のとげぬき地蔵がかわいいと話していた。また、地蔵が赤い布を巻いている理由はなぜかということを質問し、真剣に説明を聞いていた。東京さくらトラムを見た際には、熱心に写真を撮るブータンの学生の姿が印象的だった。
 
　他にも、道端に小さな花を植えたプランターがあることに関心を持っていた。ブータンにも同じようなものはあるが、きれいだったという感想があった。ブータンの学生が、プランターに関心を持っていることが新鮮であり、自然を大切にするブータンの人々の思いが感じられた。
 
【Takinogawa and Oji】
Next, we visited the Takinogawa and Oji districts, which are the old parts of Tokyo. Our first stop was the Koganji Temple, which is famous for its Togenuki Jizou, a statue of a deity believed to have special healing powers. The Bhutanese students took special interest in the red bib Togenuki Jizou was wearing, and listened earnestly as it was explained how the color red is believed to ward off evil in Japan. We also watched adorable little trams run on the Tokyo Sakura Line, Tokyo’s only tram line.
 
Many flower planters also drew the interest of the Bhutanese students, who told me that they reminded them of what they have back home.

【12月21日】ワークショップ・成果報告会・修了式

【ジェスチャーゲーム】
　ワークショップを始める前に、ジェスチャーゲームでアイスブレイクを行った。お題によってブータン人と日本人ではイメージするものが違い、興味深かった。例えば、ブータンの学生が「日本のお参り」のジェスチャーを見て、「キリスト教のお祈り」であると捉えていた。

【Gesture game】
A gesture game was played as an ice-breaking activity. The same gesture seemed to invoke different images for Japanese and Bhutanese students.
 
【ワークショップ】
　ワークショップでは、「言語の壁を越えて協働する」というテーマで活動をした。
今回の活動は、「モー」と「ムウ」という言葉のみで相手と意思疎通するというゲームだった。「モー」と「ムウ」しか話せないため、その様子が面白く、各チームで笑いが起きていた。言葉が通じないからこそ、より相手のことを理解しようという姿勢になれた活動だった。
 
【Collaborative Workshop】
The workshop titled “Communication Beyond the Language Barrier” was held, in which the participants experience how they can communicate without the help of language. They were only allowed to use two sounds, “mo” and “mu.” The diligent efforts to communicate without language were often funny, resulting in laughter from the participants.
 
【成果報告会・修了式】
　成果報告会では、ブータンの学生が日本で学んだことについての発表を行った。発表の内容には、「神社に入る時、靴を脱がない」や「建物が高いため、めったに日差しが見えない」などの感想があり、ブータンの学生の視点が新鮮だった。また、「日本人と外国人の間で偏見がない」という意見や日本語で挨拶をしてくれる方がいて、嬉しくなった。修了式では、修了証書と記念品が授与され、ブータンの皆さんが笑顔で受け取っていた。
 
【Presentations and Closing Ceremony】
The Bhutanese students presented what they learned on this trip. Some of their comments were quite interesting. They were surprised that they were able to keep their shoes on at shrines, while the taking-off of shoes is ubiquitous in Japan. They also marveled at how little sun they got in central Tokyo because there were so many tall buildings. I was especially impressed when one Bhutanese student commented how non-Japanese people were treated equally in Japan.
 
At the closing ceremony, certificates and mementoes were presented to the Bhutanese students.

BHUTAN WEEK 2022に参加した感想

　今回のプログラムは、英語を実践できる場になった。学んでいる英語を活かしてブータンの皆さんと会話できたこと、また通訳を体験できたことは貴重な経験になった。ブータンの方々は英語が流暢で、英語学習のモチベーションが上がった。そして、学んだ英語を実践する重要性を再確認した。今回の経験から、日本の伝統や文化についてより深く知り、その学んだことを英語で伝えられるようになりたいと思った。
 
　日本人の当たり前が、ブータンの皆さんにとっては、当たり前ではないことを改めて実感し、興味深かった。また、プログラム期間中、ブータンのみなさんはいつも笑顔で、優しい方々だと感じ、ブータンが幸せの国と言われているゆえんが分かった。
他にも、ブータンの公用語であるゾンカ語を直接、教えてもらう機会があり、積極的な交流ができた。参加した日本人学生からは、「もっと多くの時間をブータンの皆さんと過ごしたかった」という声があった。他国の人々と直接、交流する機会が増えてきた今こそ、主体的に彼らとのつながりを大切にしていきたいと実感した。

What I learned from BHUTAN WEEK 2022

It was a really good chance for me to use English in authentic communicative situations. I was also impressed by how well the Bhutanese students spoke English. I renewed my determination to learn English, but probably the most important lesson I learned from this program is the importance of learning about my own culture and traditions. I hope one day to be able to share their appeal in English. It was also a good cross-cultural experience, in which I learned once again that what we take for granted in Japan is not so in a different culture, and had a chance to learn Dzongkha, the official language of Bhutan.
 
The warm smiles and kind consideration of those from Bhutan, known to be the Happiest Country in the World, left strong impressions on all of us.
 
 
We hope to have more opportunities like this to get to know those from other countries, and to be active in developing closer ties with them.
