【昭和学報】テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス、ダブル・ディグリー・プログラム体験記 ～ アメリカの大学の授業のリアル ～ / My experience at Temple University Japan Campus as a Double Degree Program Participant ～ The real life at an American University ～

昭和女子大学では、本学と提携校の2校で5年間学び、両校の学位を取得する「ダブル・ディグリー・プログラム」に力を入れています。現在このプログラムで世田谷キャンパス内にあるテンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス（TUJ）で学んでいる学報委員の体験記を日英2か国語でお届けします。

こんにちは。国際学部国際学科3年の出口理紗子です。私は、テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス（TUJ）とのダブル・ディグリー・プログラムに、第4期生として参加しています。また、昭和女子大学では国際学科所属ですが、TUJでは、教養学科に所属しています。今回の記事では、経営学の授業の一環で体験した、山梨県のボランティア活動についてご紹介します。この記事を通して、少しでも多くの方にTUJやダブル・ディグリー・プログラムについて知っていただけたら、嬉しいです。

  Hello, my name is Risako Deguchi. I am a junior at the Faculty of International studies and Department of International Studies at Showa Women’s University (SWU). I am participating in a double degree program between SWU and Temple University Japan Campus (TUJ) that is in its fourth year. Hence, I am a student at SWU’s Department of International Studies and I am also a student at TUJ’s Department of General Studies. In this article, I will introduce a volunteer experience in Yamanashi prefecture which was offered as a supplement to a business class that I took this semester. If more people become aware of TUJ and the double degree program by reading this article, I will be happy.

～ TUJの経営学の授業とは ～
~ What is business class at TUJ ?  ~

授業では、クラス内で意見を発表する機会やグループディスカッションの時間が多いです。ビジネスに関する基礎的な知識、問題解決の方法、企業の分析方法などについて学ぶことができます。この授業を受講している学生の多くは、国際ビジネス学科の学生ですが、私のように他学科に所属する学生も参加しています。ビジネスの知識が無くても、問題なく授業に参加できるため、ビジネスについて学んだことがない学生にもおすすめです。

  In this business class, there are many opportunities to exchange opinions and discuss in groups.We learn about some key business concepts such as various methods of problem solving, how to systematically analyze companies, and so on. Most of the students in this class are business majors, but there are a few non-business majors like me taking this class. I would like to recommend this class for students who have never taken any business class before because one can take this class without much prior knowledge about business.

～　授業だけでは得られなかった気付き ～
~ Learning takes place outside the classroom too ~

今回のボランティア活動の目的は、「地方創生とサステナビリティ」をテーマとし、国内外の学生が東京以外の地域を体験する、というものでした。また、本授業を担当している教授によると、様々なビジネスの分析手法や問題解決法を学生に学んでもらいたい。しかし、根源には「三現主義^※」という、日本の経営学の基本の考え方があり、学生にリアルな現場に触れてほしい、とのことでした。今回の活動では、9時から15時の間に休憩を挟みながら、41本のブドウの木を植えました。教授と地元の方に手伝っていただきながら、活動に参加しました。

The purpose of this volunteer work was that students from Japan and other countries experience different regions outside Tokyo with the theme of ‘Rural Revitalization and Sustainability.’ ’Also, my professor told me that he would like students to learn about various business analysis methods and problem solving methods. In particular there is a basic way of thinking in Japanese management principle called ‘Sangen-Shugi.’ Therefore, he would like his students to experience the real field. In this activity, we planted 41 grape trees from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. with small breaks in-between intense work. I participated in this activity with my professor and a local resident.

Note : Sangen-Shugi is a way of thinking that highlights our need to actually observe the real objects in the real field, recognize the real situation, and after that resolve the problems, not an armchair theory.

Grape trees

ブドウの木は、以下の工程に従って、植えました。
  We planted grape trees in the following ways:
 
 

1. 事前に掘られている穴の中に根や枯れ枝がないかを確認する。
   Check whether there are stray roots or branches in the hole which were dug in advance.
   手で引き抜けない根が張っている場合は、大型のハサミやノコギリで切る。
   If there are roots which we cannot get rid of using our hands, we cut them with large scissors and saw.
   
   
2. ブドウの木の枝が南に向くよう、置く。
   Place the grape trees in a south-facing angle.
   
   
3. 木の根の部分を中心に穴を埋めていく。
   Re-fill the hole with the roots in the center.
   
   
4. 穴全体が埋まったら、土をならす。
   After most of the hole is refilled, rake the soil.
   
   
5. 袋の中に溜まっていた水を、根の中心にかける。
   Pour water which was collected in the bags to the central part of the roots.

ブドウの木を植える作業では、最初は土を穴の中へかき入れることが大変でしたが、作業に慣れると、効率的な取り組み方が分かるようになりました。作業を始めた直後は、一つの穴に対して全員で最後まで作業を行っていました。しかし、作業を繰り返すうちに、木がほとんど土に埋まった状態になったら、次の木を植える作業に取り掛かれるようになりました。
 
Initially, planting the grape trees was hard because I needed to put heavy soil to re-fill the hole. However, once I became used to doing this activity, I could understand how we can try this activity more effectively. When we just started the activity, we tried to do the work until the end with all members in each hole. After we tried the same action many times, I could move to another work to plant new trees when the tree was almost buried in the soil.

〜 実際の現場を訪れたからこそ見えてきたニーズ 〜
~ The needs which I could realize because of the real field experience ~

　作業に取り組んだ畑の近くには、重機を貸し出している場所がありました。そこには、ショベルカーが置かれていて、この場所があることで、重機を遠方から持ち出すことなく、農作業に取り組めると思いました。これは、現地に行かなければ分からなかったことであり、実際に現地で作業をし、必要なことを知ったからこそ、発見できたことだと感じた。
 
Near the farm, there was a place to lend heavy machinery. There were many large tractors, shovel trucks and dump trucks there. Because of this, I thought that local farmers do not need to own or transport heavy equipment from far places. I observed this scene and visualized the farmer’s behaviors because I was at the actual site and tried the actual activities, and I understood the needs there.
 
 

数時間をかけて、ブドウの木を丁寧に植えていきました。

　活動を通して、東京にはない山梨の魅力である、豊かな自然を活かした生活の良さを感じることができました。TUJの授業では、世界各国の学生と肩を並べて学ぶことができ、日本について見つめ直す機会が多くあります。TUJへの留学を考えている方、TUJの学生と交流したい方、TUJについて初めて知った方が、この記事を通じてTUJを身近に感じていただけたら、幸いです。昭和女子大学とTUJが、今後も交流の輪を広げられるよう、TUJの学生生活について発信していきたいと思います。

By participating in this activity, I felt Yamanashi’s attractive point such as making use of the richness of nature which we do not have in Tokyo. TUJ’s classes have many opportunities to re-examine Japan by studying with students from all over the world . I will be happy if other students will study at TUJ, wish to start interacting with students at TUJ or feel closer to TUJ because they become aware of TUJ.I would like to write more articles about life at TUJ and expand our interaction in the future as well.
