Characteristics of the Department of Contemporary Liberal Arts

Learn together, hone your skills, and create the future
01
"Learning" = Learning and generating questions
The starting point of learning is to question common sense and find questions from there. To do this, students will learn about social issues in three areas across the board: social planning (region and society), media creation (information and media), and multicultural co-creation (world and culture), and decide on their own theme. In these difficult-to-predict times, students will learn and acquire the ability to utilize the unchanging theories (ways of thinking) that are at the origin of various phenomena.

02
"Technique" = honing your skills
Students will acquire the competency skills necessary to explore their own themes and question society, such as social research, data analysis, Japanese expression, and video expression. Through specialized subjects that combine theory and practice, students will experience many group discussions and presentations, and will develop the ability to work with diverse people to reach a consensus, the ability to take the initiative, and the ability to communicate their own ideas in an easy-to-understand manner.

03
"Creation" = Create and grow together
Students will put the knowledge and skills (competency skills) they have learned into practice through project activities and group work. Even if they are faced with a problem that they cannot solve alone, they will seek an answer by sharing ideas with project members. Through classes and project activities in collaboration with the local community and companies, students will learn how their own field of expertise can be utilized in society and discover the path they should take.

What made you decide to study the Department of Modern Liberal Arts?
I was interested in the department's "project activities" that tackle issues such as regional revitalization and the expectation that I would be able to take on a variety of challenges. I also felt that by meeting not only students but also unique teachers, I would be able to deepen my learning and use it to grow as a person.
What did you learn?
In order to realize my career plan of "finding a job that makes people smile," I am participating in project activities and taking classes that involve group work. In particular, in the "Let's Enjoy Sangenjaya! Project," I introduced the shops in Sangenjaya, where my university is located, to promote the charm of the area. In addition to gaining experience in supporting the revitalization of the area, I also learned the importance of consulting with and collaborating with others.
What do you want to work on next?
After graduation, I will work in a hotel that is visited by many overseas customers. I served as a committee member for the department's accommodation training "Dormitory Training" and developed the ability to think from the other person's perspective. After graduation, I would like to continue thinking from the customer's perspective and focus on language studies in order to provide "service that makes customers smile."
Which class left an impression on you?
This department has six classes in the "Eyes to See" series that teach a wide range of subjects, including culture, regions, international relations, media, and information. Among them, "Eyes to See Society" is a class that breaks common sense and gives you a new perspective. It broadened my horizons and helped me acquire discussion skills.
