Refining sensibility, thinking ability, and co-creation ability
in diverse design fields contribute to society
As we transition from an industrial society to a knowledge society, the role of design is becoming more and more important. In an age overflowing with things and information, what is something worth leaving for the future? We foster talented people who can think deeply about this question, and who are equipped with design knowledge and skills to be creative in a flexible manner.

Creating a people- and earth-friendly architectural environment

Associate Professor Hitomi Tsutsumi, Department of Environmental Science and Design

[Research into healthy and comfortable indoor environments]
We create architecture and carry out various activities there. The role of architecture is to provide shelter to protect us from outdoor heat, cold, wind and rain, and natural disasters, while also providing a place to live in a comfortable and healthy interior space. In modern society, we spend most of our time indoors, and the indoor environment affects our health and comfort. At the same time, architecture needs to be designed with the global environment in mind. My specialty, architectural environmental studies, is a field that considers how to create healthy and comfortable architectural environments with minimal energy consumption.
In the field of architectural environment, we are conducting research on the health and comfort of indoor thermal and air environments through subject experiments and actual measurements. Actual building users are diverse in terms of gender, age, and physical constitution, and differences in comfort may occur even in the same environment. In addition, residents themselves will likely take actions to adjust their surroundings, such as opening and closing windows and adjusting their clothing. We are conducting research on comfortable environments, including the diversity and behavior of residents.
