Curriculum Vitae
Curriculum
Cultivating registered dietitians who can play an active role in a global society and highly information-oriented society
In the first year, you will improve your basic skills as an expert by focusing on basic and liberal arts subjects, and in the second year, you will comprehensively develop your specialized knowledge and skills through more extensive experimental and practical subjects. In the third year, you will acquire practical and applied skills through off-campus "on-the-job training" and specialized elective subjects, and furthermore, through "graduation research" you will comprehensively learn research methods and logical thinking skills necessary for registered dietitians. It is a curriculum that will help you gain strength.
In order to develop the ability to adapt to a global society, we offer "Scientific English (to learn food and nutrition)" and a short-term overseas training course "American Dietitian Training Program" as an elective course within specialized education courses. In addition, to develop the information processing skills required in a highly information-driven society, advanced communication skills that cannot be replaced by AI (listening skills, ability to convey, flexibility, etc.), and problem-finding skills, we offer "Nutrition Information Processing Theory (Exercises)" as a specialized elective course and the project-based elective course "Shining ☆ Healthy Beauty Project."

Supported by thorough national exam preparation and the daily efforts of students
A high pass rate of 97.6% (39th exam)
The national dietitian exam tests advanced specialized knowledge across a wide range of subjects, including medicine and nutrition, food and health, nutritional education, and school lunch management. Students will gradually acquire specialized knowledge starting from the basics by the first semester of their third year, and begin preparation for the national exam in the second semester of their third year. In their fourth year, students will take 3 mock exams in the mandatory "national exam preparation course" to prepare for the actual exam.
[The pass rate for the national registered dietitian training course (for new graduates) was 80.1% (the pass rate for the entire exam, including graduates, was 48.1%).]

Comprehensive overseas programs, including a 15-week fall program in Boston
In this department, students can participate in various overseas training programs (optional), such as the summer session held at the Boston campus and the American Dietitian Training Program. In addition, the Fall Boston Program (3 weeks) is held in the second semester of the third year. This program is unique to our university, as it allows students to obtain the qualification to take the registered dietitian exam in four years while also studying abroad for a long period of time.

Enhancement of specialized knowledge and skills through comprehensive experiments and practical training
Experiments and practical training begin in the first year. In cooking classes, students begin by learning how to use knives, and progress to more advanced subjects as they progress through the years. The culmination of the cooking classes is a school lunch business management training in the first semester of the third year. Students will incorporate the latest knowledge, theories, and techniques in nutritional and production management, and improve their management skills as leaders in the school lunch field.

Engaging in various surveys and research
Building a foundation as a researcher through graduation research
The faculty members in this department specialize in a wide range of subjects, allowing students to choose from a variety of graduation research themes. In the first semester of their third year, students are assigned to a research lab to build a foundation as a researcher. In the lab, students begin by learning how to research specialized literature in English, and then learn a variety of experimental techniques and research methods. They conduct research, including during long vacations, and complete their graduation thesis. Through this series of efforts, students' ability to formulate hypotheses, verify them, use logic, and write in a written form is greatly improved. Some students also present the results of their research at specialized academic conferences before graduating.

Project
Project-based learning
Showa Women's University conducts project-based learning in which students use their specialized knowledge to come up with solutions to problems that have no answers. The department incorporates project-based learning in classes, exercises, and seminars.
