Characteristics of the Department of History and Culture

Think with your hands, see with your feet
01
Cultivate the ability to look at history and culture and think from a broad perspective
Through a systematic curriculum that crosses the fields of "history" and "culture," we aim to develop individuals who have both high-level expertise and a wide range of knowledge. Through numerous practical classes, fieldwork, and project activities, students will acquire the ability to practically explore things.

The department has its own short-term study abroad program at Showa Boston in the United States, and also offers an overseas training program called "European History and Culture Seminar," where students visit various parts of Europe with faculty from the department to deepen their learning.

Utilizing your qualifications to play an active role in society

One of the major features of the Department of History and Culture is that students can simultaneously obtain three MLA (museum, library, and archive) related qualifications (curator, librarian, and archivist). By obtaining qualifications such as junior high school and high school teacher, librarian teacher, and archaeological surveyor (level 3), students will develop the ability to play an active role in society.

What made you decide to study the Department of History and Culture?
I became interested in early modern history due to a TV program on Japanese history, and was also interested in architectural history both in Japan and abroad. The Department of History and Culture, which offers a wide range of study options, including history, art, and folklore, was the ideal learning environment for me. I was attracted to the curriculum, which allows me to study across a wide range of fields.
What did you learn?
The key phrase for the Department of History and Culture is "think with your hands, see with your feet." Many of the classes emphasize experience, such as actually touching materials and going to the site, and one of the features of the department is that students can learn things that cannot be learned through classroom learning alone. In addition to folklore, we also focused on studying Japanese culture, such as Buddhism, regional culture, and the history of Japanese performing arts, and we also focused on studying to obtain qualifications as a curator and an archivist who handles public documents.
What do you want to work on next?
I experienced Japanese culture from an overseas perspective during the Showa Boston Short-Term Study Abroad Program "Japanese Culture Program" and it strengthened my desire to spread Japanese culture. After graduation, I will work at a hotel in a tourist destination. I would like to use the expertise I gained in my studies to convey the charm of the area to customers.
Which class left an impression on you?
"Traditional Culture in the Field" was a class where students could learn by watching and experiencing professional techniques such as dyeing, calligraphy, and sword making. They had valuable experiences such as thinking about seasonal Japanese sweets and trying their hand at incense-smelling.
